    Mexican authorities have announced they captured Edgar Valdez Villarreal, who was fighting Hector Leyva for control of the Beltran Leyva drug cartel, on Monday after a shootout. The location of the capture was not revealed.   • Hurricane Earl Could Hit Carolinas, Massachusetts

    Hurricane Earl became a category 4 storm Monday with winds of 135 mph. Meteorologists expect Earl to maintain its strength and turn towards the Carolinas before heading north to Massachusetts over the weekend.The outer edges of Earl struck Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands Monday, releasing heavy rains and strong winds on the area.   • Rescuers Start Drilling to Free Trapped Miners in Chile

    Crews began drilling a shaft Monday to reach 33 miners who have been trapped more than 2,300 feet underground in Chile. Officials say it could take up to four months to complete the shaft.The men have been trapped in the San Esteban copper and gold mine in the Atacama region of northern Chile since August 5.   • Saudi Couple Arrested for Hammering Nails into Maid

    A couple in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia have been arrested for hammering nails into one of their housemaids. The couple has not been identified. They are accused of holding down L.P. Ariyawathie, 49, and hammering 23 heated nails into her arms, legs and forehead.Ariyawathie, who is from Sri Lanka, began working for the couple in March after the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment registered her as a worker obtaining a position with a recognized job agency.   • Volcano in Indonesia Erupts for the Second Time, 2 Dead

    A long-dormant volcano in Indonesia erupted for the second time Monday. Mount Sinabung first erupted Sunday morning just after 12:15. It erupted again Monday for more than 6 hours. The second eruption spewed smoke and ash more than 3 miles in to the air.Priyadi Kardono of the National Disaster Coordination Agency said two people died after Monday’s eruption due to heart attack and respiratory complications.   • Fire at Retirement Home in Russia Leaves 9 Dead

    A resident at a retirement home in the Tver region of Russia doused himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire, killing himself and 8 other residents. The man has been identified as 86-year-old World War II veteran Nikolai Dudin.Authorities say a gas can was found in Dudin’s room. Dudin died of burns while the 8 other victims died of smoke inhalation.   • Lead Investigator in Mexico Ranch Massacre Goes Missing

    A lead investigator and a municipal police officer in Mexico are missing. Both men were looking in to the massacre of 72 migrants, whose bodies were found in a shelter on a ranch in Tamaulipas state on Tuesday. The men disappeared Wednesday. The investigator has been identified as Roberto Jaime Suarez Vazquez. The police officer was not identified.President Felipe Calderon announced the men’s disappearance on Friday.     Doctors at Kamburupitiya Hospital in Sri Lanka say they successfully removed 13 nails and 5 needles from the arms, legs and forehead of 49-year-old L.P. Ariyawathie, a housemaid who says her employers in Saudi Arabia held her down and hammered the nails in to her body. Six other nails remain in Ariyawathie’s body because removing them would risk damage to her nerves and arteries.   • Heavy Rains Cause Landslides in Turkey, 12 Dead

    Heavy rains in northern Turkey caused landslides Thursday. At least 12 people have died and one other person is missing after landslides in the town of Gundogdu, located in the Black Sea province of Rize, buried homes, buildings and vehicles.Rescue workers have pulled dozens of people out of damaged homes. At least seven people with injuries were rescued. Several roads were shut down. No other details were available.
