Atlanta 3/26/2012 10:30 PM GMT (WooEB)
Two British soldiers were shot and killed by an Afghan soldier Monday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province. Britain's Ministry of Defense confirmed the deaths of the two soldiers, but did not release their names. NATO reports the shooter was killed at the scene by coalition forces.
The shooting happened around 11 a.m. near the main gate of the Provincial Reconstruction Team's headquarters in Helmand’s capital, Lashkar Gah. The shooter, a native of Nangarhar province who had been in the Afghan National Army for 4 years, had apparently argued with the British soldiers before the shooting. It is unclear what the men argued about.
The Afghan soldier had recently been communicating with insurgents, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claims.
Afghan officials have condemned Monday’s attack. The governor of Helmand also offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
